Cinderella Story: Sergio Garcia’s Hard Earned Masters Win
An eventful Masters week wrapped up with a true Cinderella story win by Sergio Garcia who, in 73 winless Major starts, inked his name in the history books as a Masters Champion.
A week without Tiger, without Arnie and without World #1, started without the traditional Par-3 Challenge due to inclement weather. The first two days allowed only nine guys under par as 40mph winds blew through Augusta National.
Battling through soggy pimento cheese sandwiches and watered down beer, the fans were rewarded for their resilience as Saturday’s sun rose and the big guns rose with it. Speith, Fowler, Rose, Garcia, Couples, McIlroy all found the top of the leader board and set up an incredible Masters Sunday.
Two missed putts on the 72nd hole led Garcia and Rose to a sudden death playoff where Justin found the pine-straw off the tee and was forced to chip out. Sergio stuck his approach to give himself a run at birdie and the win. Rose missed his par putt and Garcia curled his birdie in for the victory, the Green Jacket and to shed the huge gorilla off his back with his first Major Championship in 19 years as a pro.
Ole, Ole Ole Oleeee Sergio!
