Justin Thomas, FedEx Cup Champion After Incredible Season
The FedEx Cup Points all came down to the final round on Sunday at the Tour Championship to decide who would be the victor.
When Brooks Koepka birdied the 13th hole to move into a tie for sixth, it altered the points and made Jordan Speith and Justin Thomas tied in the points race.
“I laughed when I saw it,” said Thomas of the tie that was projected on leaderboards across East Lake. “I thought honestly, this probably will happen and the golf world will completely blow up and lose its mind if Jordan and I were in a playoff for the FedExCup. I don’t think anybody would have known what to do with themselves.”
In a points format that can get confusing due to varying factors, Thomas’ second place finish at the Tour Championship netted him the FedEx Cup and $10M dollar bonus.
Although a playoff showdown would have broken the Internet, Thomas’ win was more than earned after an incredible season of wins and solid finishes.
“Feels very weird,” said Thomas, who finished alone in second for his 12th top-10 finish of the season. “It’s odd getting something so tremendous, one of my best achievements in my career without winning a golf tournament, so it feels different but it’s still great.”
